AcquiredImmunodeficiencySyndrome(AIDS)isachronicandpotentiallylife-threateningconditioncausedbytheHumanImmunodeficiencyVirus(HIV).HIVattacksthebody'simmunesystem,specificallytheCD4cells(Tcells),whicharecrucialforfightinginfections.Overtime,HIVcandestroysomanyofthesecellsthatthebodycannolongereffectivelycombatinfectionsanddiseases,leadingtothedevelopmentofAIDS.AIDSisthemostadvancedstageofHIVinfection,characterizedbysevereimmunesystemdamageandtheoccurrenceofopportunisticinfectionsorcancers.Withouttreatment,peoplewithAIDStypicallysurviveaboutthreeyears.However,withpropermedicalcare,includingantiretroviraltherapy(ART),HIVcanbecontrolled,andprogressiontoAIDScanbeprevented,allowingindividualstolivelongandhealthylives.HIVisprimarilytransmittedthroughunprotectedsexualcontact,sharingneedles,contaminatedbloodtransfusions,orfrommothertochildduringpregnancy,childbirth,orbreastfeeding.ThereiscurrentlynocureforHIV/AIDS,butadvancesintreatmenthavesignificantlyimprovedthequalityoflifeforthoseaffected.Preventionstrategies,suchassafesexpractices,needleexchangeprograms,andpre-exposureprophylaxis(PrEP),playacriticalroleinreducingthespreadofthevirus.AIDSremainsamajorglobalpublichealthissue,withmillionsofpeopleaffectedworldwide.Continuedresearch,education,andaccesstohealthcareareessentialinthefightagainstHIV/AIDS.
